After the first rush of crazy rumor-mongering about Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton’s divorce, the interest sort of dropped off a cliff. I kept writing about the situation but those posts barely got any comments. Which is too bad, because some of those stories were rather sketchy, and now Blake Shelton is getting into a beef with In Touch Weekly. First, some backstory: a few years ago, there were many, many, MANY stories about how Blake Shelton allegedly had an affair with a young singer named Cady Groves. In Touch, Star and other outlets had stories that were variations on the same theme, that Cady and Blake had a torrid fling and when she wanted more, he dumped her and basically destroyed her would-be career. The fact that Cady was and is active on social media and she seemed to drop clues about all of this just became more fodder for the rumor-mongering.
In the days and weeks that followed Blake and Miranda’s sudden divorce, Cady was once again active on social media, seemingly tweeting about Blake and how he broke her heart, how he lied to her and how he destroyed her career. In Touch, Star and Radar have reported on all of it, and Radar scored an interview with Cady’s brother, who claimed that “All that crap that happened years ago ruined her career.” In Touch ran Radar’s quotes and they’ve been following up on the drama with some original reporting. Now TMZ says that Blake wants to shut it down:
Blake Shelton is slamming rumors he had an affair with country singer Cady Groves … threatening to sue the magazine that made the claim … and also insisting she’s in on the lie. We’ve learned Shelton’s attorneys have fired a letter to In Touch magazine, demanding they retract their story about Shelton and Groves carrying on an affair.
In the letter, we’re told Shelton’s attorneys describe Groves as someone who became “infatuated” with Shelton. The letter accuses the magazine of using Grove as its source, and any insinuation by her that she had an affair with Blake is a lie.
The legal letter is strong, “Mr. Shelton did not have a sexual relationship or affair of any nature whatsoever with Ms. Groves.”
Since the rumor surfaced, Groves has spoken about Shelton … but has stopped short of denying the affair.
In Touch is not backing down, saying, “Not only does In Touch magazine stand by its story but we have another exclusive about Blake and Miranda’s divorce in this week’s issue.”
I think it’s perfectly possible that Cady is some kind of stalker fan-girl loving the attention she’s getting from the tabloids. I also think that it’s possible that there’s a reason she’s so attached to this idea that Blake ruined her career following an affair: because it might be true. Allegedly. And what I find bizarre is that Blake is only going after In Touch. Radar/Star has had exclusive reporting about this situation too and I would even argue that Radar/Star’s reporting is way more damaging than In Touch Weekly’s stories. Anyway, if Blake wants to fight this, he’s going to have to do more than send a threatening letter to In Touch, I think.
