Most passenger injuries were described as mild in statements from multiple local agencies, but other passengers told reporters that it was a frightening and unpleasant occurrence.

A passenger Theresa Darragh told the Ventura County Star, “I thought we were goners.”

Kimberly Mathews, a passenger in Darragh’s car, explained to the media source how the crash left her with shoulder and back pain from striking the steps.

Three of the train’s seven passenger cars derailed due to the collision, but all remained upright. The train’s luggage car began to spew smoke, but the fire was immediately put out, according to the fire service.

The Ventura County Public Works tanker truck involved in the accident was on a level-grade crossing as the company’s workers were cleaning a nearby channel.
