Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from August 10, 1993 to September 18, 2020. She was previously a Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, from June 30, 1980 to August 9, 1993.

Her father, Nathan Bader, was a Russian Jewish emigrant, born in Podolsk. Her mother, Celia (Amster), was born in New York, to Polish Jewish parents. She was married to taxation law expert Martin D. Ginsburg, until his death, with whom she had two children, attorney Jane C. Ginsburg and music producer James Steven Ginsburg. Her grandson is actor Paul Sperra and her nephew is screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman, both of whom worked on the film On the Basis of Sex (2018), about Justice Ginsburg.

Justin Ginsburg’s patrilineal line can be traced to Salomon Bader, who was born, c. 1759, in Kraków, Kraków County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland, and to his father Samuel Bader.

Justice Ginsburg’s paternal grandfather was Samuel “Sam” Bader (the son of Isaac/Isaak Moses/Moyzesz Bader and Yetta Levy). Isaac was born in Kraków, Poland, the son of Mendel Samuel Bader and Yocheved/Jachwet Birnbaum.

Justice Ginsburg’s paternal grandmother was named Ida Milstein (the daughter of Moshe/Mosha Milstein). Ida was born in Khmelnytskyi, Khmel’nyts’ka oblast. Moshe likely was the son of Gershon Mielstein/Milstein and Mintza.

Justice Ginsburg’s maternal grandfather was named Joseph Amster/Auster (the son of Meyer Wolfe/Wolf Auster/Oster and Sara/Sura). Joseph was born in Burshtyn, Halyts’kyi district, Ukraine.
