Aqua Teen Hunger Force is returning to Adult Swim after an eight-year hiatus. The five new episodes will hail from original series creators, Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro. The news comes just before the premiere of the Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm animated movie, which debuts HBO Max in February. The film will be available on the adult-oriented nighttime cable channel on March 12.

Speaking about the 12th season of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Willis and Maiellaro said they are thrilled to be making more episodes for a new generation of fans. They also told Deadline that it will be exciting to build upon the most impressive collection of IP ever assembled. “Success is optimal and leads to quality,” the pair told the publication.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force first premiered on Cartoon Network in 2000. More episodes of the series continued airing on Adult Swim through 2015. The animated series had been a network staple due to its strange humor, ad-libbed dialogue, and improvisation. This comedy style went on to inspire other successful animated shows like Rick and Morty.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force chronicles the adventures of three anthropomorphized fast food items. This includes a very smart, well-meaning box of French Fries named Frylock, a selfish, pathological liar milkshake called Master Shake, and Meatwad, who is a shape-shifting, simple-minded ball of ground meat. They are often joined by their human neighbor Carl Brutananadilewski.

Together, these characters embark on wild and wacky adventures. They are often seen facing off against various villains or other individuals in each episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. But these interactions are limited to one episode with a few minor characters appearing in subsequent stories. Interestingly, a few installments have seen the protagonists encounter celebrities, historical figures, and athletes.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force received a few accolades during its initial run. In January 2009, the series was ranked the 39th best in IGN’s Top 100 Animated TV Shows. It was also nominated for Teen Choice Awards in 2007 and 2008. In 2011, Willis and Maiellaro earned Annie Award nominations for their writing on a Season 8 episode called “The Creditor.”

Talking about the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro congratulated fans on waiting just long enough for it to be free on the service their parents pay for. “I can’t wait for you to discover the project everyone has been talking about,” they said via Deadline. The duo also jokingly told people to delete everything else and focus exclusively on Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm.

The Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie stars the iconic Frylock, Master Shake, Meatwad, and Carl. The story sees the friends split up and reunite to battle the infamous corporate overlord Amazin, which is led by Neil the tech mogul, and Elmer, his brainy, scientist sidekick.

Written and directed by Willis and Maiellaro, the movie stars Carey Means as Frylock, Dana Snyder as Master Shake, and Willis as Meatwad. Natasha Rothwell, Robert Smigel, and Tim Robinson round out the cast. The movie was produced by Williams Street Productions, Deadline reports. There is currently no release date for the 12th season of Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
